Transcervical and AI Vaginal Insemination

Vaginal AI is a process where semen is expertly collected from the male dog and then gently deposited into the female dog’s vagina using a specialized instrument, mimicking the natural mating process without the physical act itself.

Vaginal artificial Insemination, also known as side-by-side insemination, closely replicates natural mating while minimizing physical contact and stress between dogs.
During an AI appointment, we begin by collecting semen from your stud and performing a thorough quality assessment to ensure it is viable. Once processed in our laboratory, the semen is ready for insemination. A catheter is gently inserted into the bitch’s reproductive tract via the vagina, where the semen is carefully deposited.
This procedure is suitable for fresh and chilled semen only and provides a safe, effective, and low-stress alternative to natural mating.

Advanced Breeding for Optimal Results

When precision is paramount, especially when using frozen semen or dealing with specific breeding challenges, Transcervical Insemination (TCI) is the gold standard.

Transcervical Insemination (TCI) is a safe and effective technique used with all types of canine semen—fresh, chilled, or frozen. During the procedure, we use a small camera and a catheter to gently pass through the cervix and deposit the semen directly into the uterus, placing it as close to the eggs as possible to increase the chances of pregnancy.
Most bitches stay calm and comfortable throughout the process, which is quick, gentle, and doesn’t require sedation. TCI is the only insemination method suitable for frozen semen and provides the best results for chilled or lower-quality samples.
This method also allows us to see the reproductive tract clearly, helping us confirm the bitch’s stage in her heat cycle and check for any abnormalities. TCI offers the same level of safety as traditional AI while giving your dog a relaxed, stress-free experience and the best chance for a successful breeding.

TCI at ReprotechVet

Our team will help to organise your dog’s TCI process from start to finish including progesterone testing, carrying out the TCI. When using frozen semen that is not already stored with us, it will need to be shipped to our clinic prior to your insemination, where it will be expertly handled and stored until your bitch is ready. Once we have catheterised the cervics using the TCI endoscope, the semen will be thawed and a mini assessment will be carried out to ensure what we are inseminating is of viable quality, after the semen will be pushed through the catheter into the uterus within close proximity of where the eggs should be.
